Enervon Prime, the nutritional drink for older adults, and Jollibee team up for a promo that aims to further strengthen the bond of today’s Filipino families.

The “Jolly Memories” promo rewards customers with free Jollibee meals for every purchase of Enervon Prime. The effort is driven by the shared commitment of Enervon Prime and Jollibee in championing the importance of having a sharp mind and a healthy body in making more memories with the family.

Unilab Nutritionals Marketing and Operations Director Brenda Miranda stressed the importance of staying healthy and strengthening the family unit. “This is a perfect partnership since Jollibee and Enervon Prime share the same ideals,” she said. “And what’s great is that the promo helps families keep their minds sharp and make more memories as they spend more time together when they visit Jollibee.”

From Oct. 15 to Dec. 15, 2009, one can get free Jollibee treats simply by purchasing Enervon Prime in any SM Supermarket, SM Hypermart, Savemore, Robinsons Supermarket and Mercury Drugstore. Just present the proof of purchase to any Jollibee store nationwide and you can instantly avail of the following treats: Peach Mango Pie for every Enervon Prime 200g, one-piece Burger Steak with rice for every Enervon Prime 400g pack, and a one-piece Chickenjoy meal for every Enervon Prime 1kg. Consumers can claim their free Jollibee meals until Feb. 15, 2010.

Last August, BPI kicked off its Real Thrills Promo in partnership with Chowking (see story). Real Thrills is back, this time, in partnership with Jollibee.

The idea is still the same. You earn one point for every payment you make via Express Online or Express Phone. With just a minimum of seven points, you can redeem one Jollibee Spaghetti. For 14 points, you get a two-piece Jollibee Burger Steak. For 21 points, you get a two-piece Jollibee Chicken Joy.

If you have registered before in the Real Thrills Page, there’s no need to register again. Just log in and read the mechanics and FAQs.

The promo period runs from Nov. 3, 2009 to Feb. 3, 2010. Redemption period is from Nov. 3, 2009 to April 4, 2010.

I just have one concern, though. I still have a few points left from the Real Thrills-Chowking promo. Is it possible to use those points in the Jollibee promo?

I’ve always been an advocate of having an emergency fund. In my previous blog entries, I recommend that you should have at least eight months’ to one-year worth of emergency fund (see story).

But what if you have already completed your emergency fund? What if you have managed to amass one-year worth of EF? What now?

First of all, congratulations! This is a great way to start your pursuit of financial independence.

Now that you have your emergency fund, make sure you keep this safe and sound. Place it in a time deposit that gives you a pretty good interest rate.

Any money that comes in now can be placed in other investment instruments or earmarked for other goals. If you’re planning to buy a new house, then you can start saving up for the 20% down payment. You can also start investing in mutual funds or bonds. You can also get additional insurance for you if you have dependents. Basically, the coast is clear for any investment you may want to take.

A few weeks have passed ever since tropical storm Ondoy and typhoon Pepeng hit the country, causing massive damage to many Filipinos. Until now, many are still trying to recover from the magnitude of the damage.

Allow me to provide some perspective. Aside from the environmental lessons, there are financial lessons, as well.

I know a very devastated husband (not mine) who lost his entire FHM Philippines collection. He diligently collected every issue from day 1 and it was all swept away by the flood.

Another husband’s comic collection was also badly damaged. His wife narrated that her husband started his comic collection ever since he was young. When the flood reached their home, they weren’t able to save anything. All was left was the loose pages from the collection.

Other stories I heard include the rock-bottom prices of houses in subdivisions that were badly hit by Ondoy like Provident Village. It seems that in their desperate attempt to just get rid of their houses and to start moving forward, many homeowners are dropping the prices so low. One is even offering her two-storey house for just P1 million.

What is the take-away from all these?

I believe that calamities like these are a wake-up call from God to focus on the more important things like your loved-ones and your own lives. Maybe we have spent way too much time and money in shallow things like collections, a grand home, etc. when we could have pursued more important things. Sure, we all want to live a comfortable life but we also have to realize that these material things should be balanced with spending more time with our family and loved-ones.

I feel so sorry for those collections and houses damaged by the storms. I have my own Archie comics and snowglobe collections and I would probably be just as devastated. But the storms also serve as a wake-up call to me to focus on the more important things in life.

This was the text message that I received from SMART. For Ondoy- and Pepeng-affected families, this is a welcome occurrence. Since they would want to check on their relatives and friends, an increase in credit limit would allow them to do so.

But it would be much better if SMART also implements a similar program for prepaid subscribers. I assume that majority of its subscribers use prepaid and SMART should also have something for them. How about no expiration for loads until November? Or free texts/calls for prepaid subscribers?

It’s very simple, really. For SMART Gold and SMART Buddy subscribers, you get reward points every time you use your line, whether texting, surfing or sending MMS. For every P1 transaction, you get five reward points. So what can you get from the points?

* P50 bill rebate for every 12,500 reward points
* P300 Buddy Prepaid Phone Kit discount for every 30,000 rewards points (when you buy at the Wireless Centers)

I regularly use the P50 bill rebate, which is reflected in my monthly bill. I think SMART also offers discounts but I’m not sure about that.

Regular readers of Pinay and Money know my worst experience with a BDO manager. Recently, a friend posted a very frustrating experience with BDO. My friend gave me permission to repost this in Pinay and Money.

BDO sucks big time

Why?

Just a couple of days ago, a close friend made a cash advance on her BDO credit card. The ATM did not dispense any money even if it was online and it was just newly “fed” with bills. Yet, the money was deducted from her account. Sweet, ain’t it?

So, she made the necessary calls to the ever-so-nice and efficient (yes, I am being sarcastic) people at BDO. The first person my friend was able to talk to told her that it would take 7-10 banking days to get her money back and that she would just have to wait because it was “the process.” My friend obviously got pissed so she asked to talk to the supervisor, hoping for a better answer other than “because it is the process.”

The girl made my friend wait for a god 15 minutes and never got back to her again. To even make things worse, when my friend followed-up the following day, she finds out that her report was not logged in by the girl she talked to. AND SHE WAS GIVEN WRONG INFORMATION REGARDING THE PROCESS. BDO employs really efficient call center agents, no?

Wait. It gets better.

Apparently it doesn’t take 7-10 days to get the money back. It takes 75 BANKING DAYS TO GET THE MONEY BACK. You read that right. 75 BANKING DAYS to get your money back. That’s a good two and half months. Considering the many holidays that are coming, it will take my friend up to 2010 just to get her money back. Wow. Quite a lot of time considering she doesn’t even get to charge interest from BDO for each day she has to wait.

Now where is the fairness in that? Credit card companies charge you exorbitant penalties if you pay a day late. AND YOU CAN’T EVEN CHARGE THEM FOR SOMETHING LIKE THIS!!! Tell me, where is the fairness in that?! And their excuse is because: it’s the process. What sort of banking process requires 75 banking days to do, when it takes them no less than a day to call and pester you to pay up your credit card bills when you are a day late in paying? Really sucky process if you ask me.

And their tag line goes, we find ways.

I say BDO sucks big time.

Typhoon Ondoy brought continuous heavy rains in Luzon since Friday afternoon (Sept. 25) that by Saturday morning, the flood has started to rise and many were forced to flee.

Here in Fairview, Quezon City, about 50% of the area was affected with floods. North Fairview, Sitio Ruby (Sapamanai), and West Fairview saw some parts with water rising as high as a house.

Our own area in East Fairview was also affected. We live in a condo compound and by Saturday lunchtime, we saw the waters in a nearby creek spill. Here’s the video I took yesterday when the water outside the compound was still knee-deep.

In just a couple of hours, we saw the water come inside the condo compound. It reached the ground floor and residents there had to transfer to the higher floors.

And this is the video taken from our window. The cars in our street were submerged.

My own parents were stranded in Bulacan after they went to Nueva Ecija yesterday morning to attend a wedding. They left Nueva Ecija by noon because they received info that the nearby dams would release water.

It took them 12 hours to get home because they got stranded in Bocaue, Bulacan. They had to get off the vehicle because the tollway patrol already told passengers to get out. They had to take shelter in the headquarter of the Manila Tollways.

Last Tuesday, I had to rush somebody in my family to the Philippine Heart Center because he was complaining of headaches, dizziness and nausea.

We proceeded to the Emergency Room of Heart Center upon the advise of a relative. We arrive at 11 AM and had him checked. The ER doctor asked us if he wants be confined and we agreed.

It took us seven hours before we could get a room. In those seven hours, we had to stay at the ER because there was nowhere else to stay. It was a sad and heartbreaking sight, I tell you.

I got to talk to one patient who has been at the ER since 6 AM of that day. She said she was on a wait list because all the rooms are booked. She said she came all the way from Lucena City upon the referral of her doctor. She was accompanied by her son. She also told me that a couple of patients have also been waiting since the day before, Monday.

I assumed that these patients are waiting for a bed in the charity ward. We were fortunate because we have the ability to pay and was able to get a semi-private room even though it took us seven hours of waiting. But what about these people, who can’t afford anything?

I also saw another elderly patient in the afternoon, who was wheeled in by her grandnieces/grandnephews. They wanted to confine their grandaunt for her pulmonary condition but was unable to do so because all the rooms–all kinds!–were still booked.

I overheard the grandniece saying that FEU General Hospital in Fairview, Quezon City was also booked and the only room available is the P4,200/day kind. She said they couldn’t afford it.

It was sad and heartbreaking because it takes so much to maintain one’s health. Hospitals and medicines are very expensive and not all people can afford healthcare. When I become rich, I’ll build a hospital or donate several rooms for the less-fortunate.
